Hey there, I’m Mary Anastasiou!

Australian children's book author, picture book mentor & publishing insider

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been telling stories.

Long before I became a children’s author, publishing mentor and creative director, I was a kid growing up in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, dreaming up outrageously naughty tales and getting completely lost in my imagination.

Storytelling has always been my thing.

It followed me into my career in marketing and advertising, where I spent decades creating campaigns, building brands and learning how powerful the right words can be when they land in the right hands.

But it was my son, at just six years old, who gave me the gentle little nudge that changed everything. ‘When are you going to make your dream come true, Mummy?’

My debut picture book, I Want to be a Rock Star, was self-published in 2015, and later picked up by a traditional publisher. My I Want to be... series has found its way into classrooms, libraries, bookshops and little hands across Australia, with I Want to be a Sports Star shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Book of the Year in 2022.

Along the way, I’ve also worked on the other side of the publishing desk as former Creative Director at Larrikin House and Managing Editor and Marketing Manager at Five Mile. So I understand children’s publishing from the inside out.

I know what makes a picture book manuscript stand out, what publishers are looking for, and how overwhelming it can feel when you’re trying to turn a story idea into a book that actually works.

These days, while still writing, I love helping aspiring children’s authors, picture book creators and illustrators refine their ideas, strengthen their manuscripts and portfolios, build their creator brand and take the next brave step in their publishing journey.

You could say this lil' rebel has finally found her cause.
